Type/Gauge of wire to run underground to a barn?

Folks,

I'm building a barn here in Maryland and will run 220V 60 amps from the breaker box in the house to the barn. My plan is to run it underground, probably in PVC. It's about a 200 foot run.

Questions:
1) What type of wire/cable should I use?
2) What gauge should it be?

Needless to say we have a building permit and want to satisfy the inspector.

Thanks!
Jack

At least #4 copper THWN for hots and neutral and #8 copper for ground. #2Aluminum quadplex mobile home feeder cable may be cheaper.

I highly suggest aluminum 2-2-2-4 Mobile Home Feeder (MHF) for your application. This size is good for 60A at 200ft. I also suggest 2" PVC conduit. If you can't purchase it locally, Wire and Cable to Go on the web is a cheap place to get it even with shipping. http://www.wireandcabletogo.com/2-2-...der-Cable.html
