outdoor deck lights

I am mounting a couple oval deck lights to an outside wall. I attached a waterproof outlet box to the wall. When I went to attach light fixture the box is too deep keeping the fixture from sitting flush on the wall. Take a look at instructions they picture an octagonal metal box for mounting. Is this kosher for outdoors since its covered by light fixture? Thought this type of metal box was indoor only.

If a box is inside a wall it is not considered outside. Waterproof boxes are normally installed on the surface of a wall. If you are trying to install a light flush with a wall then you need to use a remodel box for your installation.
