Removing old ceiling light box
Hi -
Not sure if this is a electrical or carpentry forum. I'll start here.
I am replacing 2 old ceiling fans. When I took them down I found the boxes to be for light fixtures and won't fit the new ceiling fans.
I'm going to use a retrofit box. Debating between the Raco and this safe-t-brace at HD.
Before I can do that I'm having a hard time figuring out how to remove this old light box. We have a hip roof and the attic access is in this area is too small. The box does have any screw or nails visible. Just this red wire or cable through the top. If I snip this wire will the box come out? Picture attached.
Thanks!

Those definitely are not fan boxes.
Plastic boxes usually have ears that are attached to screws to hold them in.
Those boxes don't even look familiar but you're right..... it looks like it will come out if you cut that red wire.
Pretty scary to have had a fan on there.

Yea, the previous owner of our home was...lets say creative. When we took one of the fans down we realized that one of the 4 blades didn't match. It was shorter and only had 1 screw holding it in as the 2nd didn't match the hole!
Anyway, we will rectify it! I will try clipping the cable. I was expecting like you said some scews and tabs.
Any recommendations on the retrofit boxes?
