Advice needed on heat cable

I a man building a fully enclosed box for my sons ant colonies. This is a box for storing newly caught queen ants. It will contain 4 test tube holders that have ducts to hold heat cable. The heat cable needs to be low wattage (3.5W/ft or less if possible) and variable low temp 16-30 degreees Celsius/60-86 degrees Fahrenheit. The variable temp rheostat controlled would be perfect, but is not a deal breaker. 30C/86F on a thermostat will work. I need a cable that can be custom cut and all terminations done by myself and have a very short minimum circuit length (I have found as short as 2', but I would really like to find shorter if possible. Please advise what my best options are.

I don't know about the short length, but you could look at a tile heating cable or mat. Those are quite reliable in the temp range you want with commodity parts from a big box store.
