Running NM Under Attic Floor

I am planning to add one more smoke detector in my upstairs. I just finished adding ones to my other bedrooms. Is it okay for me to run the NM under the attic flooring? Should I go over or under the insulation, or does it not matter? My understanding is that cables fished into finished areas don't need to be stapled, but I want to make sure that this applies to my situation. I was planning to do a U-shaped run, so that I could avoid lifting the attic floor and drilling holes in the joists. I was planning to fish the cable under the floor to the edge of the attic (where the floor ends). I would staple where the cable exits the floor and every 4.5' thereafter. I would then route it to the correct joist bay. Other than using more cable, is there anything wrong with having a U-shaped run?

I don't see any issues with your plan. Under or over the insulation is fine, but I would probably choose over. No staples are needed where fished.
