Rewiring your whole house?

I just read on some website that if your home is over 30 years old you really should do a re-wire of the entire house!

So my house is built in 1971 and I realize the wires aren't new by any means, but should I really rewire the whole house? Most of it is older "nm" 14/2 and 12/2, 10/3 wire all with bare ground wire , not nm-b and of course the oven, dryer, washer, etc have thicker cable.

Nothing flickers in the house and I don't get shocks from anything. I don't have all types of modern appliances either and no dishwasher. I do have a computer though.

The wires I've seen so far are "Anaconda", Kaiser, Columbia. I do have 2 Kaiser aluminum wires that I plan on replacing though.

I would not bother to replace all of the wiring for the sake of replacing all of the wiring.

But if you do, you can do it piecemeal at your leisure.

One thing that would be useful is to redo "push in and it sticks" aka backstab connections with use of the screws on the various receptacles and switches.

 

Thanks, I'm doing that and replacing all my outlets with TR Leviton outlets and using the screws. All the outlets in this house ARE BACKSTABBED, as are all the switches!

 

It was on the internet, so it must be true Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear second hand.

 

Ha, I like that too! Yeah I don't really feel like coughing up $5-10k to rewire the whole house! I've been replacing the outlets and switches and the copper on the ends has looked good so far.

 

Brian, these are the same topics you have brought up in multiple thread on this board. Some you sound like you have already dealt with.
