Discovered Ceiling octagon junction box.

Upon removing a mirror tile on wall I found this octagon junction box. It had a plastic cover that had been sealed and glued to it. I don't think that it's safe as is and was just curious best course of action. Proper cover but round or replace box? It's also recessed about 1 inch or so. May need extension ring and cover plate im guessing but thought I'd ask.pictures are always sideways....

Most metal octagon box extenders are 1 1/2 inch deep. Carlon makes a round plastic one that fits an octagon box that you could use and then put a round cover on it. Or you could replace with an old work square box with a more conventional cover.

There's nothing particularly unsafe about it, but it should have a proper cover and remain accessible, unless you can verify that circuit is dead and the other ends of the wires have been disconnected and abandoned. Then you could just cover it up with a sheetrock patch.
