Fan humming rotary control

Got a ceiling fan with downrod that has a control especially for fans. On full speed it's fine, however as you turn it slower, it produces a loud buzzing, which changes depending on the speed. It's not a dimmer switch but wondering if i need a different type.

Fans aren't made to be controlled by rotary rheostat type controllers. Is the switch fan rated? Can you post a picture of the switch? What speed did you initially set your fan to. It should be set to High.

I'll get up on the ladders later. It's like this

The switch is fan rated.
Maybe i need a 3 speed one.
Fan is set to high but it has a pull switch on it as well. It's just too high to reach.

Some fans hum no matter what type of control you use. They are just poor quality fans. A 3 speed might be worth a try.
