Loose outlets in boxes

Most or all of the outlets in my house are loose within the boxes. When I try to secure them, they are usually pushed so far into the box that the cover doesn't sit flush. Any tricks or simple products to remedy this without much intrusion?

Thanks all, this forum is awesome.

It sounds like the box was set too deep when installed or paneling or wallboard was installed after the box was originally installed.. You need to use electric box extenders.

If the drywall/plaster is damaged you can install device spacers Ideal Spacers (25-Pack)-172451L - The Home Depot to help have the device solid spacing to the wall surface. Longer 6-32 screws might also be needed.

I ran into loose outlets a few times, Twice it was due to the fact that the installer used a nail & 1 screw instead of 2 screws. In a kitchen, if someone added tile to the surface, it would appear that the box was too far back when it wasn't when the house was built. The cover plate would pull the outlet to it & it would tighten enough that way. I didn't know about those spacers. They look like a good solution.
