Missing metal tab to join 2 batteries on a battery insert tray.

I used aluminium foil to connect them but the batteries seemed to wear out very fast. It's 2 AA batteries.
What the best way to connect the batteries?

You can get a strip of copper or brass and cut it to shape making your own connecting strip. You could also use steel though rusting might eventually be an issue. Thin sheet metal can be salvaged from dead appliances around the house or can be bought from hobby and craft stores.

Is aluminium foil high resistance? Is that why the batteries died quickly or just coincidence?

Aluminum conducts better than the steel used in the battery holder so it's probably coincidence.

Go to a 2nd hand store and find another gadget which uses batteries. Buy it and remove the spring/metal piece from that. These things are cheap at 2nd hand stores.
