Light Switch Wiring

Hello,

My hall lightswitch broke. There are 3 separate switches that control one light bulb. I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to electrical, but I thought I would do just fine replacing it. I bought a cheap lightswitch from the hardware store and tried to wire it up, but now that switch has to be "on" for the other two to work. If I turn off the switch I wired, the other two don't do anything. HELP? What type of switch do I need and how should it be wired?

There are 2 black wires and 2 white wires in the spot where the switch is.

Were the white wires wire nutted together when you removed the old switch?

With 4 wires in the box it sounds like you had a 4 way switch. How many switches operated the same light?

You need a 4 way light switch. One black and white will go to each pair of terminals on the switch.

Ok I have a 4 way switch and there are 4 terminals and a ground terminal . What wire goes to each terminal ? (Sorry I'm such a novice)

There should be a diagram embossed on the switch and or on printed instructions that came with it. Since it varies with manufacturer we can't know what that is. Sometimes it is one cable to each end of the switch, sometimes it is one cable to each side of the switch. Are there two different screw colors not including green ground?

Ok there are two gold screws labeled "output" and two black screws labeled "input"

Do you still have the package ?
Is there a part or item number for the switch ?

I don't still have the packaging unfortunately . When I get home I'll check and see if I can find the part #
