LED fixture came with no assembly instructions! help!
The light comes with a big black wire containing a blue and brown wire. One end presumably connects with the two white wires shown below, while the other end is connected to 2 of the 3 wires I have poking out of the ceiling box (a thick white, thick green and thin brown). I connected the wires in every configuration possible but it doesn't work. I don't know what the function of the white or black loose pieces in the photo and didn't use it anywhere yet. Help!

I tried to make your picture better but still not sure what I'm looking at. I don't see colors you mentioned. I see a power supply with two white wires coming out.
I would expect to see a black and white house wire in the ceiling box. You didn't mention a black wire. If your house is wired with cabler there would no brown wire. If wired with conduit brown would be very unusual. I'd expect it to just be a leftover wire from the previous fixture that needs to be removed.

I'm not particularly fond of the tape job on the ballast/inverter.
If I received a fixture like that I'd send it back.

The black parts look like a cable gland/connector meant to affix the cable to a through-hole (presumably in the light housing) and to provide strain relief and abrasion protection for the cable.
The white part is a wire connector.
