Question Old wiring from building to building

Hi,

I know I have a problem, just not sure how bad it is and what to do about it.
It's an old "duplex", in different parts of the country it translate to different things, so for clarification.
The original house has the meter and the power panel, the what looks like a maybe an 8 gauge wire is running from that house to another small building (studio) without the panel but just a J-box outside on that building.
I thought I had pictures, but I don't, will take some tomorrow and update.
That 8 gauge Romex wire looks pretty weathered and in some places insulation is cracking obviously from the elements.
How can I replace this wire with something more robust/protected without starting another project of burying the wire from building to building?
Thank you in advance.

If it's an aerial run wire then just replace the existing wire with a new wire that is approved for aerial use. If the existing wire is Romex, Romex is not approved for outside aerial use. You need to use a messenger wire for support or get wire that has a messenger wire included.
