outlet question

we found this buried behind a cabinet in the kitchen. there is power to both lines and the outlet seems to be ok, i am replacing it anyway.
can i just cut the part that looks burnt and attach the new outlet to the same wire after removing the burnt part? i have done this before but not in many years.

thank you.

As long as you will still have at least 6" of cable in the junction box remaining, you can cut the cables back.

What was the cause of the "burning"? It's odd that the one mark is diagonal across the wire. But yes, it looks like you have enough wire length to just cut the wire at the burn mark and re-wire the outlet back up.

Those cables should be stapled within 8" of the box.

I don't think you have any issue as shown except for the extra cable length and the lack of staples.

One advantage is extra outlets in Kitchen are always handy.

Long ago I learned a trick. Before sheetrocking spray paint a mark like a dot on the subfloor below each outlet, a triangle directly below a switch box and a square below a ceiling box. Then after the sheetrock is hung it's easy to spot and locate any boxes that got hidden by the sheetrocking.
