Proper way to run romex in the attic?
My current wiring in my attic just runs all over the top of my ceiling joist. Just laying there like it was an after thought. Is romex in an attic supposed to be secured and route in a certain way now. I am planning on replacing the electrical wring and am wondering if there is a better way?

NM cable in an attic is required to be 6' away from a scuttle access or it needs to be protected by running boards or some other method if it is less then 6'.
Cable that has been run through drilled holes is considered secured and protected. If the cable is run over the top of the joists it needs to be secured every 4 1/2' or less.
