Do I need to use conduit?

If I run 2-2-2-4 wire to a subpanel in my garage do I need to run it through conduit? The wire would be run in a wall, across my attic, and then down to the panel in my garage.

Wire is a single conductor.By 2-2-2-4 did you mean four separate wires not cable? If so then yes it must be in conduit.

If you are talking about 2-2-2-4 SER cable that has an overall outer sheathing no conduit is needed. If any part of the cable is subject to possible damage then that part needs to be sleeved in conduit.
