Green light in GFCI goes out as soon as something plugs in

GFCI receptacle has been working fine for about a year, now it doesn't.
The green light is on but as soon as something gets plugged into it, the light goes out and there're no power. (the thing being plugged in isn't turned on, e.g. a lamp that isn't switched on).
When the plug is removed, the green light comes back on.
Has nothing to do with the appliance being turned on or off. the prongs sticking into the GFCI is what turns the green light off.
Any ideas what's going on?

I suspect the device is bad. Replace the GFCI.

I assume you've tried plugging various lamps/devices in and they all cause the GFI to trip.

If it's one lamp, the issue could still be with that one lamp. But more likely, I'd go with Tolyn's suggestion. Unfortunately GFIs do sometimes go bad.
