Subpanel fed with aluminum wire.

Thank you in advance for any help that you can provide, I would like to run a 60A subpanel from my attached garage to my basement. Total distance is 85 feet. I was going to use MHF cable or 4-4-4-6 AL SER, ( I am not sure if there is a difference between MHF and SER). My question is , does the cable from my main panel in the garage need to be run in conduit to power the subpanel.? Thanks

There is a big difference between MHF and SER. MHF is mainly used for direct bury. For your situation you can use SER and is installed like NM-b (Romex) as long as it's protected from possible damage. Conduit may be used as sleeves where protection is needed.
