Smart switch for fireplace

Is a wall switch for gas fireplace the same as every other wall light switch? I'm looking for a smart wall switch e.g. z-wave for my gas fireplace.

You will probably going to need a relay instead of switch.
You will have to pull the fireplace switch and check to be sure, but many gas fire place on/off switch is low voltage.
They may use same switch used for lighting, but often wired to low voltage wiring.

Low voltage wiring cannot power smart switch, so it won't work as a direct replacement.
Instead you will have to add smart relay inside or near gas fireplace controller and power this relay with AC power available inside or feed it externally. Some gas fireplaces are battery powered (especially if it was a retrofit) and may not have AC power available.

So, to find out if it's low voltage I have to take the face plate off and verify the wiring, correct? Should I try to turn the breaker off to verify if it's a low voltage or not? I don't want to risk being shock. :-)

Yes, try to find a breaker that controls it.

Turn the power off and see what is on the switch. If it's only two wires..... whether or not it's low voltage..... it will take a smart control with a relay output.

For example..... Nutone NFS20Z
