Lights much dimmer than normal.

Had an odd ball occurrence last night. Lights on one circuit started flickering, then entire house went black. Went to main breaker...another building...breaker to house was tripped. Set it, back in house, again went dark, this time main breaker in other building was tripped. Today, tried the lights on that circuit...were burning really low....very faint. I turned off the double breaker to the hot water heater, and the lights went to normal illumination for 30 or 45 seconds, before going out.....and tripping the main breaker in other building. I guess there's a circuit panel problem. It's a Fed Pacific 100 amp, 1976 panel....not very desirable, as I've been reading about them. Is putting in a new panel a DIY job for a fairly handy man....?

Thanx for any replies.
Charlie

That would indicate a problem with the breaker feeding the house.
Is it running hot ? It may have a problem where it attaches to the panel bus bars.
