Wiring half switch outlet - not working even with tab broken off

hello

i have 2 outlet thats controlled by a light switch.

Each of the outlet has 3 wires coming out, RED, BLACK, and WHITE.

The RED and BLACK is to the brass side of the outlet. White is to the silver color side. With the tabs on both side intact, both outlet worked as a switched outlet.

I broke off the tab on the first Brass side where RED/BLACK are connected to - only the Bottom outlet worked as switched outlet, but the top one no longer works, and so is the 2nd outlet.

what did i do wrong? I tried with another brand new outlet, and broke off the same tab, and same result.

i want the first outlet bottom to be always on, and the TOP to be switched.. the 2nd outlet, i can leave it as switched.

thanks.

Hmany wires in the box with outlet. All the wires. A picture of wires would help. Sounds like switch was used as a splice to other outlet..

The receptacle wiring is correct. You have a problem at the switch.
