Buzzing box in closet, should I be concerned?

Hi All,

I was hoping you could help me shed some light on this buzzing box I recently discovered in my closet. I just moved into this rental house.

It is a small black box with a big wire going in and 2 smaller wires coming out. It is hard to get decent pictures because of the angle of where it is located. It looks like it goes to my ceiling fan. This box makes a pretty soft humming sound, and I was wondering if I should be concerned.

That is the link to some photos in my one drive account. I can't really make anything out about it. Looks like it says "signal" on it, but no makers marks or anything.

Thanks guys
Rob

My eyesight is somewhat like your pictures, but I'd say it's a low-voltage transformer, probably for your door bell. Probably 16 Volt output.

Transformer hum is not that unusual and is caused by magnetostriction. Unless the unit is uncomfortably warm, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Others should be along soon with more opinions.

Can't tell if there are any numbers on box.Do you have a door bell? Call apt maintenance and tell them. They should be able to tell you what it is. If noise bothers you tell them that also.

I also suspect it is a doorbell transformer.

That looks like a 1940s-1950s transformer to power an outside telephone bell.

You guys are right. Its a low volatage transformer for my doorbell. The house was built in 1945. So I guess some of that wiring is original too.

It looks like a door bell transformer. If it is buzzing the button at one door could be stuck on. It shouldn't buzz when not using power.
