Cordless phone batteries have proper voltage but won't hold charge

I have two Vtech handsets that are not holding a charge. When removed from the cradle, they show low battery within 5-10 seconds. I've tested both batteries with a meter and they're not around 2.55 (the wrap says 2.5v). Any ideas?

If the batteries are a few years old they need to be replaced.

Batteries with no load on them will measure higher. Measure the voltage when in the unit and turned on. I think you will see a difference.

Replace the batteries. What you describe is a classic sign of bad batteries.
