Ceiling fan wiring

I know very little about electrical wiring. I just bought a Ceiling fan and it says to use only 12 gauge wire. Except the wires that are coming out of the ceiling look thicker than a 12 gauge wire. I would appreciate some help verifying this So I can determine if I should install it or take it back. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Your image is only partially showing

It would be very unusual for wires in the ceilling (used for lighting and receptacle) to be larger than 12 gauge. Even if they were larger, 12 gauge protects up to 20amps, the next step up would be 10 gauge and they protect up to 30amp.

The instructions are alerting you to the fact that you should not use less than 12 gauge which would be 14 gauge for residential.

Please post the image again for verification.

If the wires are aluminum they could be 10 gauge and a 20 amp circuit.

Those wires are copper. They could be #14 or #12. Either would be fine for that fan.
I've never had a fan that required #12 wiring. There would not be a need for wire that large.
