Wired smoke detector has one long endless buzzer when plugged back in
My wife, prior to being my wife, had pulled down all of her hard wired smoke detectors because they started beeping and she wanted it to stop. Fast forward months and months later, I move in and decide to put all of them back. I went and bought them each a fresh new 9V battery and tested them while they were out of the ceiling. Now here's the problem, attempting to reinstall them causes the alarm to go off but not a beep beep beep and a pause rather one long screeching buzzer. The red and green lights stay on solid and only unplugging them ends the onslaught of high piercing ear assault. I have searched up and down forum after forum looking for a solution but alas no one seems to encounter this situation. It seems others have problems when plugging it back in but its the alarm that beeps not a constant endless squeal like I am dealing with.
Any suggestions/ideas?
Thanks

How old are they? Smokes only have a lifespan of about 7 years max so if they have expired in the time they were offline they might just be faulting out.
What brand and model are we dealing with?

If you do end up replacing any of them I would suggest that you either make sure you buy the exact same brand and model of the existing ones or replace all of them at one time with same brand and model that you are buying. Meaning, if you change brands/models be sure you purchase all new ones of the same brand/model.
Sometimes mixing brands and models causes the alarms to sound for no reason.

I've never run into that screeching alarm, but have you read the back of the detector? They state what the different sounds mean, so maybe it will tell you.
Usually when the detectors get old, they will start chirping similar to a low battery.
