Electrical panel question

Hoping someone can help identify what the knob is on the top right of my electrical panel?

Never seen anything like it. Is it attached to the panel? Can you take the front of the panel to reveal how it attaches inside.

Welcome. Agree with Joe, don't know, but take the cover off and have a peek inside. Yes, there is voltage in there that can hurt you, but you can remove the four screws at the corners and take the cover straight out with no harm.

Hi, I will bet itís a surge protector for lightening strikes, wipe the top off and see if there is anything written there.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. Here are two pics. There's two wires coming into the box that go into the two circles in the first pic. If this is a surge protector is it needed or can it be removed. Don't think this is something I would want to try and would need to hire someone? Was looking to frame the box in but this surge protector is in the way.

The second picture is just a repeat of the picture in your first post. It shows the panel with the suppressor in the upper corner.

In looking at your picture..... it appears the surge protector is connected directly to the mains before the main circuit breaker. That means you'd need to pull the meter to work those terminals dead. As an electrician.... I could remove those wires without pulling the meter. It needs to be done carefully.
