GFCI down stream protection

If I pigtail from the incoming power to a GFCI then from that same power add another outlet, will the second outlet be protected? Or do I need tap off directly from the 1st GFCI to get downstream protection?

It will not be protected by the GFCI. If you want downstream protection you need to connect the outgoing power wires to the LOAD terminals of the GFCI.
