Picking a U.P.S.

Costco offers at least two UPS:
  1. CyberPower 1500VA / 900Watts Simulated Sine Wave UPS With GreenPower Technology
  2. CyberPower 1400VA / 900Watts True Sine Wave Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
I do not understand the difference between simulated sine wave and true sine wave. One of the review comments said not to buy the simulated because ' if your computer is Energy-star then it will more than likely not go into backup but crash instead'

Can someone please explain what this means?

True sine wave is just like actual AC current power you get from the wall receptacle.
Simulated sine wave is stepped square waves that approximates sine wave.

Simulated sine wave causes more sharp spikes in the voltage and that often causes problem with PFC (Power Factor Correction) circuit of energy star rated power supplies.

I'd say go for true sine wave.

There are thousands of websites that talk about the difference between pure and modified/simulated sign waves so there is plenty already written about it. When in doubt go with the pure sign wave as it most closely matches the electricity supplied to your home by the power company. Modified sign waves UPS and inverters are less expensive but some devices cannot use the power they provide.
