Quick question

I have a switch that control 3 lights on the way down to the basement AND another 2 lights that r in a storage area i rarely use. Could i just cut the wire after the first 3 lights and install another switch to control the 2 lights in storage area? Is it that simple? I understand that the switch for the first 3 lights would have to be on in order for the new switch to actually turn on the 2 storage room lights. Thanks in advance Paul

Connect the two black wires to the two terminals on the switch and connect the two white wires to themselves using a wire connector.

Whites get tied together with a murret.
Then a black to each side of the switch.
