Service entrance with disconnect
As I understand it you cannot have wire from the meter to the panel longer than a few feet unless there is an outside disconnect on the meter.
are these disconnects expensive for a 200A panel?
our electrician is saying there's a model built into the meter box but it's expensive.
I cant seem to find them.
Also does the wire to the panel have to be in pipe inside?

No..... the wire doesn't have to be in pipe inside the house. Use jacketed service cable.
Two of many 200A weather proof disconnects listed.
Eaton disconnect
Square D disconnect
Here's a 200A meter pan and breaker panel combined.
You must know what type of meter pan your poco requires.

My experience is that meter sockets with a 200 amp disconnect built in is more economical and much easier to install with less labor than a separate disconnect. In the U.S. most power companies will have a list of service metering equipment approved for use on their system available for the use of the customers. That listing generally will include those sockets with a built in disconnect.
