Help wiring 3-way dimmer

Hi all- looking for some help replacing a 3 way switch with a Lutron MACL-153 dimmer. The wiring instructions are a little hard to follow.

I installed the 3 way based in this diagram and it works great.

The wiring instructions for the dimmer are:

Looking to replace switch on left of first diagram.

Why is a jumper wire needed to the black/common? Couldn’t 8 take the common f the exist8mg 3 way and wire to common of dimmer?

I’m missing something...

Thanks!

Is your wiring 100% identical to the diagram you posted ?
I've found that using the Lutron slave dimmer to be a more effective choice.
I don't like the way electronic dimmers work with the existing three way switch.

The way Lutron dimmers handle 3 way is not actually a 3 way circuit.
The main master dimmer is only one that actually controls the light fixture and the other switch is just a remote controller. Main dimmer only detects weather slave switch position has changed or not. Thus, it doesn't actually have to be a 3 way switch. You can use regular switch here as well.

The jumper wire is used because you have to connect live wire to both slave switch and master dimmer switch and you need to pigtail to connect this splice to a switch terminal.

Thanks ... yes wiring is exactly like the diagram. I should have mentioned that the dimmer was one of several recommended by the lighting mfr (Utilitech LED 6 retrofits).

The white neutral from power in goes to the lights.
The white/ neutral between switches gets capped off at both ends.
