Question

I have a bunch of old laptop power supplies that put out 18v DC at 1.7 amps and I'd like to convert the output to 12v DC.

What's the simplest way to do that?

Thanks!

There is no good way. That's why Westinghouse won the battle with Edison. In the early 20th century, Thomas Edison advocated DC power. Westinghouse advocated AC power. Westinghouse won in the market because AC voltage could be stepped up and down.

Dana,
You should be able to find a 3 terminal solid state voltage regulator at Radio Shack that will do the job. Make sure that the output current is greater than the load. This is one type of many that are available. Some have fixed outputs others adjustable.
