20 Amp wall oven on 40 Amp breaker

Hi, I recently took out an old double oven and replaced it with a single oven that states it requires a 20 amp breaker (its a 240v, so a double 20). The wiring is number 8 and the breaker in currently is a 40 amp double. Do I have to switch out the 40 for a 20 and if so can I still use the number 8 wire that is in place?

Welcome to the forums.

Yes.... you can still use the #8 but you will need to change to a 2P20 breaker to protect the oven.
