Replaced Block Heater Plug

I just replaced the block heater plug on my 2014 Subaru Crosstrek, and when I went to plug it into power, there was a spark. What might have caused this?

If it didn't trip the breaker I would say normal operation. A block heater draws lots of current so a spark on plug in or plug out would be normal.

Why did you replace it?

If it was because it overheated/melted then there may also be a problem with the extension cord.

Welcome to the forums from the North.

A good sized block heater...... 400 watts.
My diesel van uses a 1000w block heater.

Typically the plug is exposed to the elements. Between that and a less than stellar extension cord.... a lot of heat gets generated at the plug. My heater creates quite a spark when plugged in. I change the plug every other year as it gets corroded in the elements.

Sounds to me like the block heater was being plugged in under load, a spark would be normal.

Since I have never seen a block heater with an on/off switch that was my assumption also.
