I purchased a outlet tester with the 3 lights. I plugged it in an outlet and it dais reverse hot/neutral. When I took a look at the wiring it seemed ok. White to siver and black to gold. What could be the problem?

This outlet is probably one in a daisy chain of outlets. One of them in the chain is reversed. Cut the power, identify all dead outlets and check each one of them. You might want to check at the panel first. It might be reversed there.

Do ALL other outlets on this circuit test okay? Even if your answer is yes, it is still possible that the problem lies in one of these other outlets.

Another question: is half or all of this outlet controlled by a wall switch? If yes, this offers extra opportunities to goof it up.

The danger is modest. But the fix is easy. It's worth it to fix it.
