I am putting a foot mounted 24 Vac transformer in my basement to power smart thermostats throughout my house and I want to install it in some sort of an enclosure. As I understand it, the transformer mounts to the outside of a box and the low voltage connections are made on the outside and the regular house voltage connections are made inside the box and never the two shall meet (same box). Is this the right approach or is there a better option? Is there a section of code (under the 2017 National Electrical Code) that speaks to doing something like this? I feel like it is complicated by the different voltage connections. Ok this is a first. My 12 year old and 6 year old sons were getting ready for bed last night when they both say a flash of electricity flew out of the light switch when my son switched it on. My oldest who's very honest said it seemed to go across the room (about 6-7 feet) towards the other light switch. Any idea why would that happen??? fortunately no one was hurt. But scares the heck out of me and I told them not to use it again.
