SubPanel question

This is a question about the "Same Building" diagram in this thread. Sub Panel Diagrams

For the hot wires, what are they being connected to on the Main Panel? The text is blurry to me. Thanks.

They connect to a two pole breaker of the proper size based on your sub panel feeder size.

Thanks @joed. I thought the breaker would be on the subpanel side and not the main panel side. Unless there are two breakers, one in each panel?

There is a breaker in the main panel that protects the wiring between the panels.
If your sub panel has more than 6 breakers it should also have a main breaker.

The breaker in the main panel is sized by the wiring. The main breaker in the sub panel can be any size.... even larger... as it's just being used as a switch. Usually you can buy a panel with a main breaker for a few dollars more compared to a stripped panel.

If your sub panel has more than 6 breakers it should also have a main breaker.
To clarify, a main disconnect is only required for a detached structure where the subpanel has 6 or more breakers to disconnect all circuits. Subpanels in the same building as the main service panel do not have to have main breakers regardless of how many breakers are in the subpanel. That being said, it can be a convenience to have a main breaker in a subpanel.
