Installing Recessed Lights

I am wanting to install 6 recessed light in living room. I have one canned recessed light over stairs that come into living room. My main question is can I just hook into the power for the one recessed light by adding a J box in the attic or do I need to start at the switch for the current light and fish new romex into attic. I guess my thought is it should be a fairly simple project since I have one recessed light on the switch I want to control the new recessed lights but want to make sure I am not missing something.

Welcome to the forums.

Not quite clear...... do you want all the lights to work on the existing switch?
If yes..... you can either install a junction box in the line going to the first light fixture or connect directly at the fixture.

If you are considering a second switch..... you may be able to connect at the current light switch.
We'd need to know what's in that box for wiring.

Also need to consider what else is on that circuit and if additional lights will exceed capacity.
