New dimmer switch not working

I just replaced my old switch with a Lutron dimmer switch and it's not working. The lights don't turn on.
I didn't see any neutral wire so I just connected 2 wires like the old one. There was another wire (red & white) coming out of the switch which I think it gets used for 3 way setup and left it loose also.

After testing it out a few times, I just switched it over to the old switch and it worked again. What could be the problem? One thing I notice from the box is that one of the wire has 2 hooked up together. The other one is just one wire. Is that a bridge? Should I wire them differently if that's the case?

Thank you for your help in advance.

Which dimmer did you get? The fact it has a white wire probably means it needs neutral. Most digital dimmers requires neutral wire to function.

If you don't have neutral in the switch box, you will have to get a analog dimmer (ones with physical slider)

Thank you for your reply. I originally bought digital dimmer and my contractor was having trouble installing it without the neutral wire so ended up getting the analog one. However, it still isn't working.. any thoughts?

Based on the instructions.... there are four wires.
The red and black connect to the wires that were on the old switch.
The green wire is ground.
The red/white wire must be capped off.

There is a fine tuning adjustment on the bottom left side but I think the lights will still work.
It sounds like you had it wire correctly. That could indicate a defective dimmer.

One thing I notice from the box is that one of the wire has 2 hooked up together. The other one is just one wire.
Not sure what this means.
If this means there are three wires on the old switch..... the two from one end stay together.

Thank you for your explanation. That's exactly how I have it set up and it's not working. Could the dimmer be defective? It's a brand new unit. I will probably test it on a switch that already has a dimmer and working properly.
