Junction box in exterior cladding

If you cut a hole in exterior cladding and recess a junction box, can the box be an interior type junction box? As long as the cover is a waterproof cover?

My only worry is somehow water gets behind the cladding somehow but I suppose it's classed as a dry zone

As long as you're recessing the box, a standard old/new work box is fine. I would caulk around the recessed box to reduce water and air infiltration.

Surface-mounted boxes obviously need to be weatherproof.
