I have a ceiling fan in a bedroom , that uses a chain to either turn lights on or off. The problem is the chain is stuck and lights won't go off--any ideas asap, anyone Vivian

You need to replace the switch that is at the fan end of the pull chain. It has broken.

Question Fan switch

Dear John, Thanks for being the 1st one to reply. But how do you replace this fan switch, is it difficult? is it alot cheaper to dothis than buying a new one? Vivian

Yes, it'll be cheaper to replace the switch than to replace the whole fan.

Shut off the breaker.
Take enough screws out so that you can remove the cover from where the pull chain enters the fan.
Write down exactly how the old switch is wired. Be very complete and precise, or you'll have trouble figuring out how to wire the new one.
Remove the switch.
Take the switch to your local home improvement store and buy an exact replacement. Be sure you know the brand of fan you have.
Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly.
Good luck and post back on how it comes out.
