220 wiring connection for wall oven.
I am getting ready to install a new wall oven that's about 4 ft closer to the panel than the old stove. I have about 4 ft extra cable with the new wall oven location. For code do I need to install a metal box on the wall behind the new oven location or can I run the cable that's coming out of the wall directly to the oven?

If there is a supplied whip..... it must be used.
It is supplied for several reasons.

If the cable whip wire connections in the oven are not in a junction box, don't see why direct cable wires wired to connections where a whip would terminate is any different unless it is a code or UL issue.

Often the wires in the oven whip have a higher insulation rating than 75c or 90c wires found in normal home wiring. You may be able to see this by looking at the wires. Check the wires to see if they are marked with a temperature rating on them. You might see something like 105C or higher.

Why don't electric stoves come from the manufacturer with the plug installed? The last time I purchased a electric stove (2 years ago), the whip was a separate item on the receipt and not from the stove manufacturer. I doubt the salesman considered temperature when he wrote down the item number. Does the NEC state a minimum distance a stove receptacle must be from any part of the stove?

A wall oven is different from a range.
Typically the wall oven comes with a 3/4" mc flex cable whip.
While a range usually comes with nothing.

Isn't the largest source of heat in a electric range from the oven? Seems to me the heat effect on the connecting electrical cable would be the same whether it's a wall oven or electric range. How close/far does an electrical box with a electric range or wall oven outlet, connected with house wiring, have to be from the wall oven or electric range?

You said 4ft. closer not 4ft further. Any reasonable person would say "you have slack" and no need for a new box. You have too much wire. And no problem at all (choice of trimming it or tucking away slack).
