what size wire and breaker do i use to rewire an electric dryer? it is located 30 ft from breaker box and currently has 3 wire (old). it is listed as 28 amps and is 240v.

Install 8-3 cable with grounding conductor, copper.
The receptacle must be 4 wire.
(NEME config. 14-30R)
The cord will be 14-30P.
The circuit breaker: 2 pole 30A.
Be sure to connect the grounding cond. to box & recep., useing a pigtail to the green grounding screw on the recep. and to the green grounding screw in the back of the box.
Use a 4 inch square box, 2 1/8" deep.
some may argue 10 AWG is adaquate, 8 is a better choice.
Also the amperage rating of this unit specified supports the use of 8 AWG, not 10.

While 240-3-D states that 10 awg copper is allowed to carry 30 amps on a 30 amp breaker, I don't have a problem with anyone oversizing the conductor size to an 8 awg conductor, the receptacle and breaker will accept that larger size conductor without any violations incurred. Over a period of time the electrical cost savings should offset the original cost. We speak of minimums and maximums as per the NEC. If you know what the minimum safety standards are then you know how much more than minimum safe you have designed your wiring.
