Relocating a Chandelier

I have a living and dining room that are beside each other--one large space. The dining room space, however, is a little smaller than the living room and won't accommodate our furniture. We have decided to use the living room area as the dining room area and need to move the chandelier (about 15 feet or so) and link it to the single light switch which currently works the electrical outlet in the room (make it a double switch?)

What is involved in such a project? Do you have to completely destroy the ceiling and walls--which would involve extensive resheetrocking?

This is one of those projects that depends on a lot of factors.

If there is an accessible attic above these rooms, the problem is probably pretty simple.

If there is not an attic above, and you are moving this light parallel to the joists above and within the same joist space, it would be simple except for the switch (it would be a lot simpler if you left it controlled by the same switch that controls it now).

What do you intend to do with the switch that currently controls the light?

There are other important factors, such as whether this light is currently controlled by one switch, or a pair of 3-way switchs. And whether the power comes first to the light fixture, or to the switch (you can tell by looking at the colors of the wires attached to the switch).

Are you intending to do this work yourself? Or hire it done? If the latter, then I suggest you have somebody come take a look, as it's difficult to speculate further.
