dimmer switch

just inquiring as to the safety concerns about installing a dimmer switch on a switch that runs 4 track lights and 3 fans. Went a head and did it and it worked fine except the dimmer switch got very very hot, so i diconnected it. Likely cause is that the dimmer was only 600W and the circut likely exceeds that, but the building has very old wiring. Do you think I would be fine with a 1500W (or larger) dimmer or is the propblem likely something else?

Don't want to burn the building down! Appreciate your help.

You didn't tell us the wattage of the lights and fans.

If you install a dimmer large enough for the load, it will solve the safety problem with the dimmer.

But the fan motors will still burn out quickly. Motors hate it when given less voltage than they were designed for.
