Only 2 wires to control 2 switches
I am renting a house built in 1945. In the bathroom, the light
fixture and the exhaust fan are both on one switch. We would like to turn it into 2 different switches. When I removed the old
switch, there are only 2 wires. They are covered in a black cloth
with a hard rubber layer over the wire. The acutal wire is heavy, and single strand. With a tester, the light with the two ends that
lights ups when the circuit is closed, the individual wires do not
show current. Only when both wires are touched is the current
closed. Any ideas?
Thank you

The only way to seperate the two will be to run another cable from the switch box up to the fan. You might want to hire an electrician for this one. Sounds like your existing switch is working fine.
