What size of wire for a garage?

Im wanting to know what type of wire to use for my garage. My garage is 40 feet away, running it of a house breaker box to a sub panel, I will be using a air compressor and a wire feed welder.
running it underground, already have the hole dug and want to put the wire in and cover it up before it rains, while waiting for the guy to come hook it up. Thanks

check out this string

the easiest thing to do would be to put the PVC conduit in the ground now and worry about pulling the wire later. If you put a 3/4" conduit in that will leave you room for at least four number #6 THWN wires which will be good for a 50A sub-panel. The other advantage of a conduit is that you can always pull additional wire if needed(so long as you don't overfill the pipe). Check out above string for discussion on grounding issues.
