Dryer outlet help

I currently have a 50 amp range outlet on the outside of my house where a dryer outlet should be....i am hoping to replace the 50 amp outlet with a 30 amp dryer outlet. In my breaker box, there is a 40 amp breaker, which powers my stove inside the house. I am unsure if the outlet outside is on that same breaker or not. The only other breakers in the box are 20 amp. What should I do?

What you should do is run a new 30-amp 240-volt circuit for the dryer. This is the only acceptable solution.

If you want to find out whether that receptacle is on the 40-amp circuit, it's easy to do by shutting off the 40-amp breaker and testing the outlet with a $1.95 circuit tester. Test it with the breaker on and with the breaker off.
