Dimming Lights

My home was built in 1976. Recently, the lights and appliances dim and make funny noises. The lights get dim and then get bright. Even the bathroom fan goes faster and slower when the electricity changes. When the central air comes on, the same thing happens. It is on a separate breaker. I spent $800 for an electrician to come in and fix the problem but it persists. All they did was add a cutoff switch outside to get it up to code.

michaelT, You say you had an electrician out and all he did was install a service disconnect(which had nothing to do with your original problem)? Apparently he did not find any damage inside the meter can on any of the the lugs for the neutral and legs inside the meter can. Did he check the main circuit breaker for damage (due to arching inside the breaker)? You can smell or hear that problem. You may need to contact the power company and have them come out and check their end (from the transformer to the house).

Post back and lets us know how things turned out.

fixed!

Got the electrician to come back out. They found burned wire at the circuit box and they ran a new wire from the meter to the box. Don't know exactly what they did but my lights don't flicker any more so I guess the $500 bill was worth it.

Thanks for the assistance - I was able to "act" like I knew what I was talking about!!
