I have an in ground electrical dog fence that has been cut in one place. After 6 months of telling my husband it needs fixed (he is in no way or form any kind of electrical genuis) I have decided to do it myself (I am also 6 months pregnant!). The first problem is there is no give on the wire so i cant pull the 2 ends together and connect them so i guess i need to add a piece of wire to join the 2 ends together. What kind of wire do I use and how do I do this? and do I need those little yellow caps to cap off the ends I am joining? Please hurry, my dogs have been escaping!!! Thank you.

I have watched this forum for a few weeks and I am impressed with the exchanges of information and advice that goes on here. So I have a question that I would like some help in answering. I consider myself an electrical novice. I have read some materials on wiring and read a lot of stuff on this site. Also, my expericence is limited to changing switches, changing light fixtures, installing ceiling fans (only where a fixture existed) and adding a couple of lights to my garage (unfinished on the inside) on a circuit that was not and is still not overloaded. For the past couple of weeks, I have been mapping the circuits in my house. I know what turns on everthing on, but I do have a couple of mysteries. Anyway, here is my question? Is my system grounded or partially grounded? My house was built in 1938, I have lived in it for a year and a half. Originally it had knob and tube wiring but was apparantly rewired many years ago. My circuit breaker box is rated 100AMPs and contains circuit breakers, not fuses. After turning off the power, I removed the inner cover to get a look at the wires. I saw white and green attached to the neutral bus bar. I do not (repeat do not) see a piece of copper running into the ground. One of the books I read said that a grounded system would have a wire running from the box to about eight feet in the gound. Also, I do not believe that it is gounded to a water pipe. Water comes in on the other side of the house, the gas water heater is in the attic and this circuit breaker box is located outside at the back of the house. Here is why I have a mystery. I bought a simple plug tester that tells me if a recepticle is properly wired. It indicites that some are grounded and some are not grounded. (It is not a GFI tester and I am not testing GFIs). Also, when I have replaced fans and lights, the gound wire was not used in the fixtures that I was replacing. Thanks in advance for your help. Todd
